What We Do.
I get it. When you think SLP, you're probably thinking of a nice lady helping a child say their "R" sound at an elementary school.
You're not alone. Most Americans don't know what we SLP's do. Even I can admit, when I started my grad school program, I didn't know exactly how broad this field stretches. And it's broad.
Cradle-to-the-grave broad.
For example, if you are a person who happens to enjoy having the ability to speak, think, or eat, there's something that an SLP can help you with.
Of course, there are the big players (speech impediment, stroke recovery, traumatic brain injury, swallowing disorder), but there are the lesser-known things too.
We help teachers and professional speakers
recover their voice (hoarseness, resonance, pitch breaks, vocal pain). We help professionals trying to get ahead (accent modification, stuttering, professional diction, social communication).
We can even help adults with historic (or suspected) learning differences and disabilities succeed in college and beyond (study skills, memory/recall, second language acquisition).
